Week 1 Introduction

Hey, everyone.  I’m Heather Catlett! I’m a  Pre-Occupational Therapy major and I’m minoring in Health and Exercise Sciences. I’m currently enrolled in this class (could you tell?), Queer Theory, Physics Lab, Genetics, and Intro to Biology.  I’m working on increasing my science GPA so I have a better shot of getting into grad school.

My hobbies include cross stitching, hiking, and longboarding.  I’m actually super clumsy, so the fact that I longboard is kind of comical.  My friends actually got me into it, and I absolutely love it.  I always feel so free and happy when I longboard.  It’s a really awesome time to just let my mind run free and enjoy the world around me. I’m currently working on my downhilling form so I can compete in races with my friends. I love being outside, so I am always doing something outdoors as much as I can.  I also cross stitch, which is pretty tame.  Cross stitching is pretty much just making X’s on cloth while following a pattern to make an image.  I only do it when I’m watching a movie or anything on netflix.  I have a hard time just sitting still, so I cross stitch to keep my hands busy, allowing me to actually sit and enjoy what I’m watching.

Also, I have two cats! I’m a huge cat person, which is fitting with my last name (Catlett). They are brother and sister!

The orange one is named Stig (named after The Stig from Top Gear), and the calico cat is named Olive.  They are both pretty rad! Stig is extremely attached to me and way too smart for his own good.  He taught himself how to open doors, so he could get into my room and sleep with me at night.  Olive is more of an independent cat, but she’s extremely sweet.

Those are pretty much the main things about me!

  1. Hey Heather! Loved reading your introduction! Cross-stitching is always a skill i've wanted to learn! I feel like sewing and knitting is such a lost skill in our generation, so cool that you've kept up with it! Good Luck in school this semester!

  2. Oh, your cats are so cute, Heather! Calico cats are so pretty: the first cat I ever had when I was very little was a calico named Tinkerbell. The first of many cats in my life, ha ha. And each of them has a personality of its own, just like your two have their own personalities. And I know just what you mean about cross-stitch. I love to watch Netflix and I also listen to audiobooks, but I am the same way: I need to be tinkering with something when I am watching/listening... usually it is something digital, but I like coloring books too. Amazon has got me figured out, so whenever I go there, they are suggesting new coloring books for me to buy, ha ha. I hope you will enjoy the class! Maybe you will get hooked on audiobooks, too - some of the reading units have free audiobooks from LibriVox, which is really cool! :-)

  3. OH MY GOSH your cats are so adorable! I love cats and yours have such beautiful coloring! My cat's name is BooBoo Kitty and she is a sassy schizophrenic with a literal split halfway down her face. Cats just make life more bearable.

Have you done much work with occupational therapy patients yet? If not you might look into doing some volunteer work with Valir Hospice. They have a rehabilitation hospital in Oklahoma City where they do some work with occupational therapy patients as well.

My roommate cross-stitches as well. I can't get into it, probably because I shake really hard making stitching pretty difficult. However, I do wish I had more patients for sewing so I could learn to make my own clothes or alter the clothes I already have.

  4. Hi Heather! I love your cats! While my family only has dogs, we used to have two cats and the photo you posted makes me miss them so much. That is awesome that you do cross stitching also! I knit from time to time, whenever I actually have free time, but my sister and couple relatives cross-stitch. It is such an awesome hobby to have.

  5. Brother and sister cats are the best to have! Endless entertainment from the two! It sounds like you're taking some really interesting classes this semester, Queer Theory is an interesting topic and genetics are always cool to learn how they work! It's cool you like longboarding also, I've heard it's a lot of fun but I'm not good enough on wheels to trust myself with it!

  6. Hey, Heather! Firstly, good luck with all of your classes this semester! I'm a biology major, so I know how tough science courses can be--but, if you budget your time wisely, they are definitely manageable. Also, I've done a bit of cross-stitch as well as knitting and crocheting in my time to keep my hands busy, so I know exactly what you mean. Longboarding sounds awesome! I think I may be a litttttle too klutzy to do that myself, but kudos to you!

  7. Heather: It is so cool that you do cross stitching! My great, great aunt (yes, two greats) used to make the coolest little masterpieces with her cross-stitching skills and we have kept them over the years. I'm glad you seem to derive as much joy out of it as she did!

Also, Stig and Olive look pretty awesome, and it's very impressive that Stig can open doors! Perhaps you can teach him to cook for you or something. That would be useful (and comical).

  8. Hey Heather!

My roommate is Pre-Occupational Therapy as well but she is majoring in Human relations. Kind of similar to Pre-Occupational Therapy, I am Pre-Physical Therapy and majoring in psychology. What Occupational Therapy grad schools are you applying to?

Like you, I enjoy watching netflix as well. Some of my favorite shows are House of Cards, Sherlock, True Detective, and Archer. What tv shows do you enjoy watching?

  9. Hi Heather. I have a couple friends who are wanting to do occupational therapy like you. It’s not easy to get into the program, but I’m sure it will pay off in the end! And like you, I am also minoring in Health and Exercise Science and I love it. I used to love longboarding too, but I pretty much stopped since I came to college.

  10. Hi Heather, I believe that we were in obesity and weight management together last semester. I did not know that you wanted to go into occupational therapy! Do you know where you want to apply? I am applying to physical therapy school. Also, that is so cool that you long board! It really is fun and does make you feel free. Your cats are adorable, and I am glad that brother and sister got to stay together.

  11. I like your name haha! Your cats are so cute!! I'm majoring in HES too! I think I'm going to go down the PT road instead, but I'm still keeping my options open. I will definitely have to raise my science GPA though if I still plan on applying. I've never long boarded before but I've heard that it's really fun! I'm way too clumsy to try it though. I hope you raise your GPA enough to get into grad school!! Good luck this semester!

  12. What area of occupational therapy are you most keen to go into? I always thought that would be a very difficult path to follow, very selective in any case. It's funny to hear that you do stitching, longboarding, and hiking and still describe yourself as clumsy, because all of those require a good deal of precision. Anyway, best of luck!

  13. Greetings Heather! Your major sounds so interesting. It also sounds like a lot of science, which would probably be difficult for me. I am jealous that you can longboard. I’ve never been able to master the balance component of it. That’s awesome that you are working on your downhill form so you can beat your friends. I honestly have never heard of cross stitching before this. It sounds like such a unique hobby to have. I’m definitely going to google around to see some cross stitching patterns.

  14. Hi Heather- Your hobbies are such a diverse group. I have tried long boarding (and just plain skateboarding) more than once and it always ends disastrously so I gave up altogether. I do enjoy cross-stitching though. It is a fun, calming activity that can be done while watching some tv. Your cats are absolutely adorable. They look like best friends. Good luck on raising your GPA.

  15. Hello Heather! When I first read that you like to longboard, I thought that you meant surfing. I was curious how you would practice in Oklahoma. Google told me that I was silly. Longboard skateboard. Oops. You're in genetics! I took that last spring, and it has been my favorite science class at OU. It's math, biology, and chemistry all rolled into one! I hope you enjoy it. Good luck with graduate school!

  16. Hi Heather! I love the picture of your cats, very cute. I feel like almost everyone in this class has a cat! I've never longboarded before, but one of my friends did teach me how to skateboard one time in high school, didn't go all that well though, haha!

Good luck with your science classes this semester! I'm a Microbiology major, and just accepted a position at OU Med for next year, so I know how stressful keeping your GPA and applying to graduate schools is. Keep working hard and it will all pay off!

  17. You seem to have an awesome schedule this semester! Genetics and Queer Theory both sound awesome :)
I used to cross-stitch when I was younger too. It is a very methodical relaxing hobby, plus you end up with all these cool things that you made.
I am also a cat person, but I only have 1. They are SO adorable and how awesome that they get to stay together as siblings :)

  18. Wow. It sounds like you have a pretty busy semester. I think the picture of your cats is adorable. I used to not be a cat person but I ended up with my sister's cat when her boyfriend moved in with her. He is allergic. The cat that they gave me is so sweet so it changed my mind about cats. Well good luck with the rest of the semester!

  19. It is awesome to meet you. I am a HES major and I am going on to either OT or PT school. It is nice to meet someone with similar desires in life! That is pretty cool you like to long board. If you ever want to look really good, long board with me. I am absolutely terrible, which is ironic because I am decent at snowboarding. I figured that would carry over, but I was wrong. Thank you for sharing you!

  20. Hi Heather, it nice to meet you. I think it's really cool that you're majoring in something health related. I am nursing, so it's kind of similar with the classes we have to take minus the Physics. I could never get past that. Good luck with getting into your program. I think it's funny that your cats are total opposites. I hope to someday have a pet of my own. Anyways, good luck to you for the rest of this semester! Hope you get the science GPA you desire.

  21. Hi Heather! It's very nice to meet you and read your Introduction. It is so funny that you are a cat person. I'm a cat person too (we have 4 cats) and all of our kiddos love cats too. I have a couple of independent cats as well as two lovey, dovey ones. It's very cool that you are completing an HES degree. That's where I started in my journey at OU, but have since switched to Psychology. I have a passion for both areas but Psychology has always fascinated me more.
I'm not really a Math or Science type person, so the Trigonometry requirement for my Psych degree is really killing me. I can understand why you would want to bolster your science GPA for your degree.
I've never heard of long boarding, so I'm not really sure what to say about that. I am, however, quite familiar with cross stitching, as well as, knitting and croqueting. My mom passed on those skills to me when I was younger. I also like to sew when I have time. Good luck to you with the rest of your semester and in your chosen field. Take care.

  22. Heather, good luck with the HES major and better luck getting into grad school! It is funny that you are clumsy, but longboard. I would be horrible on a longboard. A few of my friends back home longboard, but I was never coordinated enough to successfully do it. I have never heard of cross stitching before so I learned what that was reading your introduction! I think both of those hobbies are completely opposite from each other so it is funny that you do both.
